June marks Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, a time to elevate conversations around cognitive health, honor the millions of individuals living with dementia, and shine a light on the caregivers who walk alongside them. At Columbine Health, we recognize that this journey deserves not only awareness—but compassion, dignity, and action.
Our commitment to memory care is year-round, but this month especially, we are proud to reaffirm our mission to support those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia—and to build vibrant, inclusive communities where they can thrive.
A Holistic Approach to Dementia Care
At Columbine Health, we’re dedicated to providing exceptional care to every resident, especially those navigating the complexities of dementia. Our Dementia Care Practice Philosophy emphasizes:
- Validating each person’s reality in the moment
- Empathetic communication that honors individual feelings
- Individualized, proactive support
- Fostering authentic relationships and engagement
This approach is strengthened by ongoing staff training through the SPECAL method, offered in partnership with Dementia Together, which draws from individuals’ long-term memories to enhance emotional well-being.
Memory Cafés: Where Joy and Connection Flourish
In recognition of Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month—and in alignment with our philosophy—we’re proud to host Dementia Together Mobile Memory Cafés across our Columbine Health communities.
These uplifting events offer intergenerational connection, music, games, laughter, and companionship. There’s no cost or pre-registration required—just bring your heart and your openness to connect.
Upcoming 2025 Mobile Memory Café Dates at Columbine Communities:
- July 22 – New Mercer Commons (Fort Collins)
- August 5 – Lakeview Commons (Loveland)
- August 26 – Commons Mountains (Windsor)
- September 23 – Centre Avenue (Fort Collins)
- October 28 – New Mercer Commons (Fort Collins)
- November 25 – Lemay Avenue (Fort Collins)
- December 23 – West (Fort Collins)
Memory Cafés are more than social events—they’re lifelines for individuals with mild to moderate cognitive impairment and their care partners. These safe, welcoming spaces help challenge stigma and remind us all of the joy still possible in every stage of life.
Care in Action: Honoring Caregivers Like Brittany
Columbine Health’s dedication to dementia care is embodied by caregivers like Brittany Fisher, LPN, a recent DAISY Award nominee whose passion and leadership uplift our residents daily. Brittany is known for her ability to bring comfort and calm to individuals with sensory and cognitive challenges.
“Brittany leads her team with empathy and guidance, ensuring each resident receives the individualized care they need to thrive.”
Her proactive approach and creative solutions foster an environment where residents feel safe, respected, and engaged—and where every team member is empowered to provide the highest standard of care.
A Month of Awareness—A Lifetime of Commitment
As we observe Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, Columbine Health remains deeply committed to supporting residents, families, and care partners navigating dementia. We do this through:
- Evidence-based practices
- Team member training and mentorship
- Innovative community programming like Memory Cafés
- A culture of empathy, connection, and purpose
This month, we invite you to join us in raising awareness, sharing stories, and celebrating the resilience and dignity of those living with dementia.
Together, we illuminate the path forward—with compassion, courage, and care.
